I am asking you a genuine question.  Imagine you are vying for a role in a production of Macbeth.  As prerequisite for the audition, the director has asked you to demonstrate how well you understand the title character and his primary motivations.  He has specifically chosen these lines from Macbeth: “From this moment, / The very firstlings of my heart shall be / The firstlings of my hand” (4.1.145-7).  The director feels that these lines mark a distinctly new stage in Macbeth’s character development.  Therefore, he wants to hear your interpretation of where these lines come from.  In other words, what lines from the early, middle and later parts of the play explain the origin of Macbeth’s forceful declaration?  The director wants all of his actors, regardless of what part they play, to demonstrate a thoughtful interpretation of what brings Macbeth to this point.  Before gaining access to an actual audition, you need to submit a clearly written interpretation.  On such occasions, the director uses these criteria to judge the success of an aspiring actor’s analysis: clear main idea, development of that idea, compelling evidence, sentence clarity and understanding of the overall play.
